Redundancy support for small businesses in the UK

Fair, compliant restructures and redundancy processes, with every stage documented and your managers coached through the conversations.

Who this is for

This service is for owners and managers facing the possibility of reducing headcount, whether because of cost pressure, a change of strategy, the loss of a major client or a merger. Redundancy is one of the highest-risk processes a small business can run. Done badly, it damages morale, creates tribunal exposure and distracts you when you most need to focus on the business. Done well, it is fair, legally sound and respectful to the people affected, including those who stay.

Common situations

  • You need to cut costs and are not sure whether redundancy is the right answer, or whether alternatives such as a hiring freeze, reduced hours or voluntary options could work
  • A role has changed or disappeared and you need to know whether the redundancy is genuine
  • You need to choose between several employees doing similar roles
  • Your plans are close to the point where collective consultation rules apply
  • Your managers are nervous about delivering difficult news
  • You want to reduce the risk of unfair dismissal and discrimination claims

How Progressive HR helps

I support the whole process, from the first conversation to the last letter.

  • Testing the business case and exploring alternatives to redundancy
  • Planning the timeline, including any collective consultation requirements
  • Designing fair selection pools and objective selection criteria
  • Drafting consultation letters, meeting scripts and notes
  • Calculating notice and statutory redundancy pay, and explaining what each employee is entitled to
  • Considering suitable alternative employment and redeployment
  • Coaching line managers before each meeting so they feel prepared and treat people with dignity
  • Handling appeals and drafting outcome letters

Where 20 or more redundancies are proposed at one establishment within 90 days, formal collective consultation rules apply, with minimum consultation periods and a notification to the government. I will tell you early whether your plans are likely to trigger these rules so you can plan a realistic timeline.

Pricing

From £700

Fixed price for restructure and redundancy support

Restructure and redundancy support is a fixed price from £700, agreed before work starts. The final price depends on the number of people affected and whether collective consultation applies. It includes planning, the consultation process, scripts, manager coaching and all documentation.

For smaller situations, an HR Helpdesk plan from £149 a month can cover letters and quick advice, and ad hoc support is £85 an hour.

Why work with Richard

I have led restructures and redundancy programmes as an in-house HR Manager, so I know how they feel from the inside as well as how the law works. My approach is firm on process and kind to people. You will always deal with me directly, and I will tell you honestly if I think a plan carries too much risk or if there is a better alternative. Progressive HR provides HR guidance, not legal advice, and I will recommend an employment solicitor where a situation needs one.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a redundancy process take?

It depends on the numbers. For a small number of employees, a fair individual consultation process often takes a few weeks. Where collective consultation applies, there are minimum periods of 30 or 45 days before the first dismissal, depending on how many roles are affected.

Can I choose who to make redundant?

You need a fair, objective basis. Selection should rely on criteria that are applied consistently, not on personal preference. Selecting someone for a reason connected to a protected characteristic, pregnancy, family leave or trade union activity creates serious risk. I help you design clear criteria and score them fairly.

Do employees receive redundancy pay?

Employees with the required length of service, currently two years, are normally entitled to statutory redundancy pay, as well as their notice and any accrued holiday. Your contracts or policies may promise more. I will help you calculate what is due.

Is this legal advice?

No. I provide HR guidance and documents. Where a situation carries significant legal risk, I will tell you and recommend that you speak to an employment solicitor.
